Our CIPA compliant content filter is intended to be a last line of defense against HTTP access. This is how web pages are delivered. Email uses completely different protocols and ports to traverse the Internet. As such, our filter cannot be configured to scan email. We do, however, subscribe to a product that does scan email and filters out Spam and Junk mail. In a recent article from Internet News (see below for link), it is reported that over 82% of all email traversing the Internet in the United States is unsolicited email. That means that for every 10 email message you receive, 8.2+ of them will be unsolicited, unwanted, garbage. Imagine working on an assembly line and trying to weed out defective products at a ratio of 8:10. You'd miss some, to be sure! Keeping that in mind, what follows is an explanation of the layers of defense in place regarding Spam and Junk Mail. The first layer consists of a purchased service called Barracuda. This service scans and filters email for Spam before it comes to the district e-mail server. In the past, the service was set to a very aggressive level. As a result, people outside the district with legitimate messages were blocked. Therefore, the aggressiveness was recently "turned down" to prevent blocking emails from the Kansas Department of Education, other Kansas school districts and some of our Board of Education Members. A side effect of lowering the aggressiveness is that more undesirable email reaches district users. The second layer of defense is Entourage's Junk Mail folder. Users can adjust the aggressiveness of the Junk Mail filter in Entourage by making changes to the Junk Mail protection tool. Opening Entourage and going to Tools->Junk Email Protections access the Entourage junk mail protection settings. Experimenting with the different levels is the only way to find a level of screening that is acceptable. The final layer of defense is the user. If users are sensitive to some of the Spam and Junk Mail that comes through, they can turn off the preview pane in Entourage. While this doesn't block the Spam from coming in, it does allow the user to not see the Spam and simply delete it. The Preview Pane can be turned off in Entourage by going to “View->Preview Pane->None”. The important thing to realize is that no content filter or Spam/Junk Mail filter will be able to stop 100% of the garbage coming from the Internet. The only way to get 100% blockage is to simply not use e-mail.The spam article is here: http://www.internetnews.com/stats/article.php/3349921 Discussions on spam filters and how they work: http://www.spambolt.com/anti_spam_faq/email_spam_filter.html http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columnist/andrewkantor/2004-09-17-kantor_x.htm http://help.isu.edu/index.php?action=faq&catid=13&docid=886 Here’s an article about how gangs are now using Spam against us: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2060235,00.asp
