KSHSAA Eligibility Requirements


 

KSHSAA ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

 

1.  Before a student athlete is permitted to report for practice in a sport, he/she must have a physical examination documented by a completed form furnished by the school.  The form requires the student gain permission of a parent/guardian. (KSHSAA Physical Form)

2.  A student, as an individual involved in an activity offered at our school, is recognized as an official representative of the school and its community. Conduct and sportsmanship, on and off the school premises, should display the highest possible standards.

3.  Students must have passed five subjects the previous semester of attendance.

4.  Students shall be attending at least five classes and in good standing (academically and behaviorally).

5.  Students shall not have more than two semesters of eligibility in grade seven and two semesters in grade eight.

6.  Students who turn 14 in seventh grade or 15 in eighth grade remain eligible for the entire school year.

7.  No student will be allowed to participate in any school activity during the evening of a day in which he or she was ill, in ISS, or suspended (ALC or out of school suspension).

All KSHSAA rules and regulations are published in the official KSHSAA Handbook, which is distributed annually and is available at your school principal’s office.  Some of those rules are summarized on this page for your convenience.  If you have questions, please ask your principal.

 

Rule 7  Physical Evaluation - Parental Consent - Students shall have passed the evaluation given by a physician and have the written consent of their parent or legal guardian.

Rule 14  Bona Fide Student - Eligible students shall be a bona fide undergraduate member of his/her school in good standing. 

Rule 15  Enrollment/Attendance - Students must be regularly enrolled and in attendance at some school not later than Monday of the fourth week of the semester in which he or she  participates.      

Rule 16  Semester Requirements - A student shall not have more than two semesters of possible eligibility in grade seven and two semesters in grade eight. A student shall not have more than eight semesters of possible eligibility in grades nine through twelve, regardless of whether the ninth grade is included in junior high or in a senior high school.  NOTE:  If a student does not participate or is ineligible due to transfer, scholarship, etc., the semester(s) during that period shall be counted toward the total number of semesters possible.

Rule 17  Age Requirements - Students are eligible if they are not 19 years of age (16, 15 or 14 for junior high or middle school students) on or before September 1 of the school year in which they compete.

 

KSHSAA SPORTSMANSHIP RULES

THE KSHSAA requires that all competing athletes coaches, and spectators exhibit positive sportsmanship. Rule 52, Article 1 states: 

Sportsmanship is a general way of thinking and behaving.

1.  Be courteous to all (participants, coaches, officials, staff, and fans).

2.  Know the rules, abide by and respect the officials’ decisions.

3.  Win with character and lose with dignity.

4.  Display appreciation for good performance regardless of the team.                                                                        

5.  Exercise self-control and reflect positively upon yourself, your team, and your school.

6.  Permit only positive sportsmanlike behavior to reflect on your school or its activities.
