Information on Concussions & ImPACT Testing
What is a concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. Ranging from mild to severe, a concussion can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Someone affected by a concussion may exhibit the following symptoms:
- Balance problems
- Blurry vision
- Sensitivity to noise or light
- Feeling sluggish
- Change in sleep patterns
- Slow reaction time or forgetful
What is Second Impact Syndrome?
Second Impact Syndrome, is when you experience two concussions within a short amount of time. This could be a life changing experience. Second impact injury results when the athlete is not removed and treated after the first concussion. Neither impact has to be severe for second impact syndrome to occur. Second impact injury symptoms usually present immediately & progress rapidly. Unfortunately this can result in irreversible brain damage or even death.
ImPACT Concussion testing is a computer-based test that objectively measures the function of the brain, focusing on attention, memory, processing speed & reaction time. This type of testing is considered the best approach to concussion management & used among top athletic organizations in collegiate & professional sports.
Why do we want you tested?
Testing is free of charge & on a voluntary basis. We would like every student athlete to consider having this testing done so that if your child experiences a concussion, your physician can use this data to help make the return to play determination. ImPACT testing has been found to be reliable, valid & extremely sensitive in determining when an athlete has recovered sufficiently from a concussion. We want our student athletes to be safe & we feel this tool will help keep them from experiencing a more serious injury. For more information on ImPACT visit www.impacttest.com.
