Nick Brummet - KSCA Counselor of the Year

The Kansas School Counselor Association (KSCA) has named Nick Brummet, counselor at Clay Center Community Middle School, as the 2026 Kansas School Counselor of the Year.

The Kansas School Counselor of the Year award celebrates excellence in the school counseling profession and highlights the vital role counselors play in supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. Each year, the KSCA collects nominations from across the state, and a committee of education professionals selects the honorees.

Brummet has served as a counselor at Clay Center Community Middle School for eight years. Prior to that, he was a school counselor at Garfield Elementary for one year and taught fourth grade for three years.

He is an active member of the American School Counselor Association and currently serves as President-Elect for the Kansas School Counselor Association. Over the years, Brummet has held numerous leadership positions within KSCA, including Ethics & Bylaws Co-Chair, Professional Development Co-Chair, and Middle Level Vice President. He also served as President of the Kansas Counseling Association in 2021 and currently works part-time for the Kansas Department of Education as a Counselor Leader Coordinator, where he helps design and deliver professional development for counselors statewide.

In recognition of his leadership and service, Brummet also received the Kansas Counseling Association Distinguished Service Award in 2022. The honor, selected by past presidents of the association, acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to the counseling profession. Brummet earned the award for his leadership on the executive board and for chairing the Kansas Counseling Conference for three consecutive years.

The Kansas School Counselor Association also expressed appreciation to Terry Johnson and Project Teacher for generously donating goody bags and gift cards for this year’s finalists.
