Patterson Memorial Scholarship Notes:  George and Mattie were long time educators and felt that an education was very important and have designated their gift to CCEEEA to be awarded to students who need funding in order to attend college. The fact that George and Mattie decided they wanted to establish the scholarship is a reflection of their belief in the importance of education. George served in World War II and he and Mattie were married after his return from the war. Both had grown up in somewhat impoverished conditions and they were very determined to obtain an education. After their marriage they moved to Kansas where George’s sister helped them get their start. They both wanted to further their education and decided that George would go to college first. After George received his degree and began teaching, it was Mattie’s turn. Mattie went to college and obtained her degree in education and then taught school for 19 years. George and Mattie were very frugal with their assets and they invested wisely so they could acquire the funds it would take to establish this scholarship. Their son, Jimmy or “Slim” as he was called by all who knew him, was their cherished son. Both George and Jimmy predeceased Mattie.  As Mattie approached the end of her life she made it very clear to all who talked with her that she was thrilled that they were able to establish such a well-funded scholarship and she was determined that children from Clay County would be able to get an education.
