As part of her departure from teaching, 45-year veteran teacher and coach Laura Pollman did not want celebrations. Like Douglas MacArthur, she preferred to fade away. Instead, she has paraphrased ideas from General Douglas MacArthur, which reflects the goals she had as a teacher.
Help me raise a person who is strong enough to see when they’re struggling and brave enough to face their fears; someone who can be proud in defeat and kind in victory.
Create a person whose actions match their wishes; someone who understands that knowing themselves is the key to true understanding.
Guide them not just to easy paths but through challenges that help them grow. Let them learn to be strong in tough times and to have compassion for those who are struggling.
Help them have a good heart and high goals, someone who controls themselves before trying to lead others, one who looks to the future but remembers the past.
And when they have all these qualities, give them a sense of humor, so they can be serious but not take themselves too seriously. Help them stay humble, so they remember what true greatness, wisdom, and strength really mean.
Then I, their guide, will feel proud and say, “I have not lived in vain.”

USD 379 Families,
Last night’s rain has compromised the basement area at Garfield Elementary, which is also a shelter in the event of inclement weather. We don’t normally close school based on forecasts, as we feel our students and staff are very safe in all of our buildings. However, in this case, we would need to transport students to other buildings, which is impractical and unsafe. We also utilize the same buses within multiple buildings for after-school transportation, which makes dismissing just Garfield impractical.
Because of this, USD 379 will have a 1 pm dismissal today.
Lunch will be served as usual. All after-school sports practices and evening activities, including Project LEAD, have also been canceled. No afternoon preschool. Please call the school with any changes to your child’s after-school schedule.

Mr. Pfizenmaier and Mrs. Schooley are looking forward to having more students complete this certificate next year! #Celebrate379

Thanks to the CCCHS Student Council, select Garfield students who met their independent reading goals got to compete in a basketball game against StuCo members today! This game had it all: Intense fans, outgoing cheerleaders, demanding coaches, and even some technical fouls against the seniors! #Celebrate379

At the Fort Hays High School Art Day, senior Ann Vasquez was awarded 1st and 2nd place for two of her art pieces, and senior Tympani Tate was awarded 3rd place for one of her art pieces within our school show exhibit. Other students were recognized with certificates for outstanding work.
At the NCKL Art Show in Chapman, students were awarded with judge and faculty ribbons and participated in sculpture and caricature competitions. Junior Jude Peterson won the Caricature Competition. #Celebrate379
