Garfield December BOE Report

This 5th grade leader took time from her day to help a classmate work through a worksheet they were stuck on. She has such a giving and considerate heart, and we are so proud of her! Thanks for being such a great 5th grade leader!

This fifth grade leader was nominated for a Pic with the Principal because of his hard work, determination and grit. We're so thankful for his leadership and good attitude!

It's recorder season in Mrs. Rourke's 4th grade classroom! Students learned a set of notes and then practiced the finger placements before actually playing the song associated with those notes. It's the baseline for band class that will come in the years ahead!
Mrs. Robinson is a new 5th grade teacher who has been a great addition at GES. Today she was teaching her students how to add and subtract mixed numbers. To help them stay engaged (and warm), students got to have some hot chocolate on this cold morning!
As part of their social studies unit on the Age of Exploration, Mrs. Chestnut's students took part in a simulation activity. Each student received an identity card as an explorer, and "fate cards" then determined what would happen next as they were at sea. Before this, students researched new technology like compasses and how they impacted travel.
You are invited!

Happy Thanksgiving from USD 379!

Each quarter we create a video for staff, parents, and community members who have signed up to be a USD 379 Academic Ambassador. These videos highlight different academic curriculums used in the district and how they impact our kids. (go to usd379.org/academics to sign up)
We decided to share the latest video with the general public. It dives into the district’s 5-year plan to improve reading scores, which is taking place across all grade levels. We wanted to showcase the hard work and dedication ALL staff have put into making sure our students have the best ELA education in the state of Kansas!

These two Garfield leaders were nominated for their attitudes during Bengal Innovators. They went above and beyond to help clean up a mess that was not theirs. We are thankful for their leadership!

We hope to see you at the next edition of Mr. Nelson's Coffee Talk this Friday at Happy Hippie!

This leader was nominated for a Pic with a Principal for how well she works with others. She keeps everyone on track around her while being inclusive, kind and patient. We are so thankful for her leadership!

It's good day when we get to celebrate three Pics with a Principal! These students were nominated for the exceptional leadership, great listening skills, and shared respect! So thankful to have them as GES leaders!

Garfield November Board Report

5th grade band is where it all starts! Mr. Eyermann was teaching students some basic note patterns this morning. There is a lot of repetition and learning going on each day!
Lots was going on in 5th grade art today! Mrs. McGuire was teaching them how to use different paint brushes depending on what they wanted to create. They then got to choose from different centers. Finally, Mrs. McGuire has each student complete a self assessment at the end of each project.
