The students in Teaching as a Career have been learning about the classroom environment, and how bulletin boards are a great way to share exciting new content, display student work, or build classroom culture. Mrs. Lange offered us a great opportunity to practice this, and allowed us to create a bulletin board meant to generate excitement with their Kansas Day celebration today! Happy 164th Birthday, Kansas!
Mrs. Graham's first graders are finding unique ways to learn how to identify 2 and 3 digit numbers. Students spun a wheel to get a number and then wrote that number on a 100s chart. Then, they explained how they came up with the answer in front of the class, who then agreed or disagreed.
Mrs. Weller's second graders were starting another story during core reading. This includes reviewing "Power Words" that would be read throughout the story. This helps build vocabulary in each grade level.
Mrs. Carr's first grade class was starting a new reading unit on "The Big Outdoors". Each unit starts with an essential question. This question was, "How do things in nature change?" Mrs. Carr combined the ELA lesson with her science lessons, which is common in USD 379 elementary classrooms.
Mr. Bent's 3rd graders were just starting a new story in their IntoReading textbook today. As with every new story, they started by reviewing the vocabulary used throughout the story. This included relating a picture of the word and having students read the definition in front of the group.

Mrs. Kristi's afternoon Pre-K class has ventured outside this week for some sledding fun! Grounds/Maintenance staff Phil Kasper even got into the mix!
Mrs. Thomas' 2nd graders learned what could stop a landslide by making a model of a mountain and using materials to prevent erosion from occurring. This is part of their Mystery Science curriculum. This lesson focused on how water can cause fast and slow land changes.

The USD 379 Bus Barn has started a bus behavior campaign for the second semester. Each driver nominates a regular rider who exemplifies good behavior and shows respect for both the driver and the other passengers.
All nominees were put in a hat, and one name was drawn as December's winner. That student is Lillian from LES! Her driver is Merlin Fowles, who drives the Clay Center Squirrel bus.
Lillian was recognized at a Rise & Shine assembly at LES. She received a certificate, a $10 gift card donated by Short Stop, and a $5 gift card donated by Ray's Apple Market.
