As part of their finals grade, Mrs. Ware is having her Calculus students create a school-wide scavenger hunt that will be given in February. They have to use math equations and numbers around the school to help the students solve problems. This is a fun activity that is becoming an annual event at CCCHS!

Mrs. Craig is using the last part of the semester with her Health classes going over the six classes of nutrients and their functions in relation to how they can help the body.

Throughout the year, Mr. Nordhus is bringing in speakers to talk to his Personal Finance class about practical financing decisions they will be making after leaving high school. Today, he welcomed Justin Tadtman and Renee Langvardt from Farm Bureau Financial Services to talk about his profession and the different types of insurance that can be purchased.

During the month of December, select CCCHS band and choir members will be performing at the Clay County Medical Center main lobby. Today, the Tiger Chorale and a small group band ensemble performed for workers and patients. It's one of many ways our kids at USD 379 try to give back to our community!

CCCHS Tiger Talks - November Edition
This newsletter is created by Ms. McFadden's Journalism and Yearbook classes.

Tis the season! Students in Mrs. Hamel's Life Skills classes discussed traditions and helped decorate the CCCHS Christmas tree.

Happy Thanksgiving from USD 379!

Each quarter we create a video for staff, parents, and community members who have signed up to be a USD 379 Academic Ambassador. These videos highlight different academic curriculums used in the district and how they impact our kids. (go to usd379.org/academics to sign up)
We decided to share the latest video with the general public. It dives into the district’s 5-year plan to improve reading scores, which is taking place across all grade levels. We wanted to showcase the hard work and dedication ALL staff have put into making sure our students have the best ELA education in the state of Kansas!

The Electronic Imaging class is back at it today with the winter sports & activities photos! Be on the look out for some team and "muscle" shots coming your way soon!

One of the unique "real world" classes offered at CCCHS is a Floral Design class taught by Mrs. Flegler. Last week, her students created small arrangements and wrote thank you notes to seven faculty members. They delivered the arrangements and thank you notes to show gratitude to the staff. The CCCHS FFA purchased the flowers to make this small gesture possible.

Mr. Nordhus' Photo Imaging class played “Photoshop Bingo with a Trashketball component” today. The bingo sheets have Photoshop tools on them. When students earned a bingo, they got a chance to shoot a basket and get points when they make it. Not only are they recalling what the tools are and do, they get a chance to have a little fun as well!

On National Substitute Appreciation Day, we celebrate and say THANK YOU to our dedicated substitute educators!

Artificial Intelligence is new to the educational world, and teachers like Mrs. Murphy know it can be beneficial to students if used effectively. Today her English 12 seniors were researching AI and its connection to an area of their interest: education, art, the military, agriculture, etc. So far they've found credible resources, and now they're creating an annotated bibliography.

Yesterday, USD 379 was visited by 2023-24 Kansas Teacher of the Year nominees from around the state. The host was Mrs. Flegler, who was the USD 379 secondary teacher of the year last year. One of the benefits of the recognition is that teachers get to visit other schools to see what they are doing to help students succeed. These teachers spent the day touring schools in Clay Center and visiting with our staff and students. They left very impressed by USD 379!

Mrs. Hughes' Spanish 1 students reviewed for a test in a unique way, thanks to her student teacher, Mrs. Palma. They worked through a digital breakout box where the students had to solve puzzles to open the combination and break free, similar to an escape room.

Students in Ms. McFadden's journalism class worked on a run-through today in preparation for Winter Media Day. This included setting up stations and practicing with lighting, backdrops, and camera settings. Media Day is Tuesday, November 26th.

We hope to see you at the next edition of Mr. Nelson's Coffee Talk this Friday at Happy Hippie!

Want a good cardio workout? Come to Mr. Haist's strength and conditioning class on the days when they play Passing Tag. Players pass a basketball around trying to tag individual runners with the ball. The only catch is the team can't run with the basketball in their hands. There is a lot of teamwork involved in running them down!

Students in Mrs. Craig’s Human Growth and Development class have been learning about the importance of play in the growth and development of a toddler. Hopscotch - played by Roman soldiers over 300 years ago to build endurance - is a great outdoor activity that helps a child develop physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Students learned about the history, rules and many benefits of hopscotch, and then taught some children from Walleta Bergsten’s daycare how to play!

CCCHS Teacher's Aide Spotlight: Lydia is an aide for Mrs. Affolter. She is always willing to jump in and do whatever is asked of her. Her commitment to helping, whether it is pre-screening work, making copies, or giving guidance to students in freshman science is consistent and appreciated by the students and adults in the room! We love having a senior in our classroom to inspire the students to be involved, helpful, and encouraging like Lydia!
