On National Substitute Appreciation Day, we celebrate and say THANK YOU to our dedicated substitute educators!

Artificial Intelligence is new to the educational world, and teachers like Mrs. Murphy know it can be beneficial to students if used effectively. Today her English 12 seniors were researching AI and its connection to an area of their interest: education, art, the military, agriculture, etc. So far they've found credible resources, and now they're creating an annotated bibliography.

Yesterday, USD 379 was visited by 2023-24 Kansas Teacher of the Year nominees from around the state. The host was Mrs. Flegler, who was the USD 379 secondary teacher of the year last year. One of the benefits of the recognition is that teachers get to visit other schools to see what they are doing to help students succeed. These teachers spent the day touring schools in Clay Center and visiting with our staff and students. They left very impressed by USD 379!

Mrs. Hughes' Spanish 1 students reviewed for a test in a unique way, thanks to her student teacher, Mrs. Palma. They worked through a digital breakout box where the students had to solve puzzles to open the combination and break free, similar to an escape room.

Students in Ms. McFadden's journalism class worked on a run-through today in preparation for Winter Media Day. This included setting up stations and practicing with lighting, backdrops, and camera settings. Media Day is Tuesday, November 26th.

We hope to see you at the next edition of Mr. Nelson's Coffee Talk this Friday at Happy Hippie!

Want a good cardio workout? Come to Mr. Haist's strength and conditioning class on the days when they play Passing Tag. Players pass a basketball around trying to tag individual runners with the ball. The only catch is the team can't run with the basketball in their hands. There is a lot of teamwork involved in running them down!

Students in Mrs. Craig’s Human Growth and Development class have been learning about the importance of play in the growth and development of a toddler. Hopscotch - played by Roman soldiers over 300 years ago to build endurance - is a great outdoor activity that helps a child develop physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Students learned about the history, rules and many benefits of hopscotch, and then taught some children from Walleta Bergsten’s daycare how to play!

CCCHS Teacher's Aide Spotlight: Lydia is an aide for Mrs. Affolter. She is always willing to jump in and do whatever is asked of her. Her commitment to helping, whether it is pre-screening work, making copies, or giving guidance to students in freshman science is consistent and appreciated by the students and adults in the room! We love having a senior in our classroom to inspire the students to be involved, helpful, and encouraging like Lydia!

CCCHS November Board Report

The FFA leadership development team presented their parliamentary procedure training at the Clay Center Rotary yesterday. There are currently 140 FFA members in grades 8-12, led by Mrs. Flegler and Mr. Craig. It is a thriving program!

Junior English students were reading about Cabeza De Vaca's expedition to America. Afterward, Ms. Dains had them create Instagram posts reacting to his findings, which included not only landing in a new area, but also in a different time period. It was a unique way to prove learning was taking place!

It's go time for Mrs. Blackburn's drama students! They are in final preparations for their fall musical, "Newsies", which will be Nov. 16 and 17 in the CCCHS auditorium.

Mrs. Thrasher's band students were hard at work this morning prepping for their upcoming winter band concert, which will take place in January. It is a talented group of kids!

Students in Mr. Nordhus' Personal Finance class won the lottery! Not really, but they did get to act like they were given $1 million. Students researched different ways to invest the money, then decided how much was going to go to where. Finally, they created pie chart medels to justify their decisions.
